Knowing what to look out for when buying a cottage home helps, choose a cottage if you are building and give yourself room for versatility. At some point creating a conservatory, sewing room or study might be a consideration. If you are looking at older homes you want to think area. Buying a property in a place you are not comfortable in can cause years of misery. If your cottage is going to be next to a lake or in the mountains far from the city ask about access, is this seasonal or will there be difficulties if the weather is unfriendly.
Property difficulties with an older home should be searched out. Check on the septic system which in poor condition can have nightmare results. Look for termite damage, signs of leaky roofs, and foundation problems with slanting floors, doors and windows that are hard to open. This gives signals of a foundation problem. Poor insulation brings expensive utility bills. Picking a home with a view is great but being sure to find out the plans for future development in the area.
