Volunteer Opportunities

At A & A Cottages we value and depend on volunteers to enhance our programming and make an impact on our youth. The support from the commitment from members of our community truly makes a difference in what we do and we find that every volunteer provides our youth and agency with a new sense of hope.


Mentor Description
Time Commitment: Minimum of 10–15 hours weekly. Requires a strong commitment to the agency as we will depend upon the office assistant to handle on-going business communication.
Special Skills or Knowledge: Office assistant must be reliable and timely. Office assistant will be involved in agency business and finances and must be trustworthy, responsible, professional and ethical.
Job Duties:
Assist in phone communication for the agency’s administrative office (answer and direct calls, take messages, etc.)
Assist with administrative paperwork (letters, donation receipts, faxing, and filing)
Follow agency administrative dress code
Communicate with the community in a professional, appropriate manner
Act as a formal representative of A & A Cottages, Inc. when dealing with the public
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
Communicate with agency staff, as needed, to ensure follow through with all business interactions
NOTE: Due to the confidential nature of administrative interactions, the volunteer must be interviewed , agree to a full background check, and certify no criminal history.
Tutor & Homework Assistant Description
On a weekly basis we provide our youth with workshops on a wide range of topics to enhance their well being. The workshops have included such things as a hike for fitness, a hip hop class, and groups on sexuality and puberty. We find that volunteers often have a special expertise or knowledge in specific areas that benefit the youth. The youth embrace the time and attention of our volunteers and learn from every experience.
Time Commitment: Varies depending upon individual volunteer; prefer contact at least once per week for 1-3 hours with individual or group. An initial commitment of at least six months is preferred.
Special Skills or Knowledge: Prefer a college graduate or college student (some of our youth are in advanced high school classes). Must have a basic knowledge of reading, writing, and math. Prefer volunteers who can approach students with different learning styles.
Job Duties:
Be available to assist individual students or group in homework assignments
Assist student or group in maintaining an assignment planner/calendar
Demonstrate and assist student or group in learning appropriate study habits
Assist student or group in understanding and utilizing educational resources available in the community
Maintain contact, as needed, to encourage and motivate student or group to excel in school
Communicate with program staff, as needed, to ensure optimum success with the student or group
Fitness Coach Description
Time Commitment: Varies depending upon individual volunteer; prefer contact at least once per week for 1-3 hours with individual client or group. An initial commitment of at least six months is preferred.
Special Skills or Knowledge: Prefer some knowledge of basic fitness techniques and nutrition; primary concern is with safety of fitness activities.
Job Duties:
Motivate and encourage child or group to maintain an on-going fitness regimen
Demonstrate and participate in appropriate fitness activities (examples of activities include: aerobics, toning, weight lifting, bicycling, jogging, power-walking, etc.)
Assist child or group in establishing a fitness plan
Maintain contact, as needed, to encourage child or group to maintain fitness plan
Assist child or group in understanding nutrition and healthy eating habits to maintain a healthy lifestyle
Communicate with program staff, as needed, to ensure optimum success with the child or group
Vehicle Maintenance Assistant Description
Special Skills or Knowledge: Vehicle Maintenance.
Job Duties:
Be available to assist A & A Cottages in general repairs and on-going maintenance of agency vehicles
Assist in regular preventative maintenance of agency vehicles such as regular oil changes, tune-ups, etc.
Assist A & A Cottages in maintaining appropriate records of vehicle repairs
If possible, assist during emergencies (ie: flat tire repairs, towing, assisting stranded staff, etc.)
Act as a formal representative of the agency in dealing with the public
Communicate with program and agency staff, as needed, to ensure safety of vehicle passengers
Household Maintenance Assistant Description
Some of our most treasured volunteers are the ones that provide us with the time of labor. Maintaining upkeep of our home with 10 teenagers and two bathrooms is a daunting task. It is often difficult to maintain the general maintenance of the home. Volunteers provide us with valuable time while they paint, do landscaping, lay new tile or even remodeling.
Job Duties:
Be available to assist A & A Cottages in general repairs and on-going maintenance of agency facilities
Assist in regular preventative maintenance of agency facilities such as changing batteries in smoke detectors, switching outside and inside light bulbs, minor damage to light switch plates, outlet cover plates, re-caulking bathrooms as needed, etc.
Assist A & A Cottages in maintaining appropriate records of household repairs
If possible, assist during emergencies (ie: plumbing clogs, appliance repairs, etc.)
Act as a formal representative of the agency in dealing with the public
Communicate with program and agency staff as needed, to ensure safety of facilities
Life Skills Instructional Assistant Description
Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per month. Volunteer must be available a minimum of one evening per month from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Additional times will vary as necessary for preparation, planning and assessment of group and individual activities.
Some Saturday activities will be planned.
Special Skills or Knowledge: Prefer a college graduate or person with a strong business background. Must posses a strong desire to prepare youth for living independently.
Must be comfortable with facilitation of large and small group activities.
Job Duties:
Be available to work in coordination with Program Director to plan, facilitate, and perform post assessment of life skills instructional workshops and activities.
Network in the community to obtain professional presenters as guest speakers and/or professional opportunities for internships or job shadow locations.
Act as an ambassador of A & A Cottages EMPOWER Program within the volunteer’s professional community.
Facilitate and/or co-facilitate a variety of life skills workshops.
Assist clients in understanding and identifying services available in the community.
Maintain close communication with program staff, as needed, to ensure optimum success with the student or group.
Know and follow all guidelines and procedures of A & A Cottages, especially regulations regarding confidentiality.
Provide support and encouragement of all participants and maintain a positive attitude at all times when working with clients.
